  13. NewtonID is a FREE application for the Newton user and developer
  14. community that simplifies and standardizes software registration
  15. by acting as a:

  18.     2) Repository for software registration codes

  35. Why NewtonID?

  38. Newton software developers and Newton users are at a crossroads
  39. concerning software registration services.
  40.  
  41. Developers are looking for a better solution to protecting their
  42. applications from software piracy. Till now, many developers have
  43. been relying on a user's owner card to generate and verify
  44. software registration codes. And some developers are moving to adopt
  45. a hardware serial number-based registration scheme.
  46.  
  47. Users are looking for a more unobtrusive and hassle-free way to
  48. register their applications. Many users are unhappy that their
  49. applications are tied to particular owner cards on their Newton.
  50. These applications disable themselves if the improper owner card
  51. has been set; this problem is evident with multiple email accounts
  52. and multiple owner cards. Other users are unhappy with a hardware
  53. serial code registration scheme since this entails a different
  54. registration code for each Newton they may own.

  56. NewtonID changes all of this by providing a universal identifier
  57. for EVERY Newton user and a flexible architecture
  58. for developers.

  60. NewtonID avoids the traditional problems associated with multiple
  61. owner cards and software registration by providing a standard
  62. for identification purposes.

  64. 1) Universal owner name: No more hassles dealing with software
  65.    registration and multiple owner cards.

  67. 2) Access to hardware serial number: Can thwart software pirates.

  69. 3) Flexibility: NewtonID lets developers choose what kind of
  70.    registration scheme they want to use!

  73.    save their registration codes in NewtonID so users can
  74.    have easy access to their software registration codes.

  79. Types of NewtonID Registration
  80. ==============================

  82. Developers who write NewtonID-aware applications have three
  83. ways with which to handle software registration:
  84.  
  85.     1) NewtonID name
  86.     2) Hardware serial number
  87.     3) NewtonID name and hardware serial number
  88.  
  89. 1) This uses the name that the user has specified when s/he first
  90.    installed NewtonID. This approach to software registration
  91.    is virtually identical to what many software developers are
  92.    currently using. This approach does *NOT* use the hardware
  93.    serial number in any way to perform software registration.
  94.    
  95. 2) This uses the Newton's built-in hardware serial number.
  96.    An application that uses this approach will only work on one
  97.    Newton. User's will have to get a new registration code
  98.    for each Newton that s/he owns. With this approach, however,
  99.    the NewtonID name can be variable.
  100.    
  101. 3) This uses both the NewtonID name and the Newton's hardware
  102.    serial number for registering software. This approach
  103.    ties a piece of software not only to the Newton's unique
  104.    hardware id, but also to the NewtonID name of the Newton.

  106. Software developers should make it clear to users what
  107. type of registration scheme they are using with NewtonID.

  115. NewtonID requires a Newton running NOS 2.x and 15K of storage space.
  116.  
  117. If you have a Newton running NOS 1.x, you will need to get a
  118. version of NewtonID for NOS 1.x.

  123. Installating NewtonID

  126. Install NewtonID using the Newton Connection Utilities, or any other
  127. package downloading utility.

  132. Creating Your NewtonID
  133. ======================

  135. When you first install NewtonID, NewtonID will automatically open. Follow
  136. these instructions to create your universal owner card:
  137.  
  138. 1) Read the help screen. Close when finished.
  139.  
  140. 2) Tap on Continue to begin registering your personal NewtonID.
  141.  
  142. 3) Enter your name. Tap on Continue when finished.
  143.  
  144. 4) NewtonID will ask you to confirm twice that the name you inputted
  145.    is correct. 
  146.  
  147. 5) Congratulations, you've just created a universal owner card!
  148.  
  149. 6) You can change the contents of the Notes filed by tapping on the
  150.    info button and selecting "Add notes"
  151.  
  152. 7) You can reregister your NewtonID by tapping on the info button
  153.    and selecting "Reregister".
  154.    
  155.    NOTE: Reregistering NewtonID will erase any registration codes
  156.    that have been saved to your NewtonID. you may have to reregister
  157.    all of your applications again if you decide to do this!

  162. Using your NewtonID
  163. ===================

  165. After creating your personal NewtonID, you will notice your name
  166. appears below your Newton's unique hardware serial code. Any notes that
  167. you may have entered will appear directly below your owner name.

  169. Be sure to refer to your NewtonID information when registering products
  170. that are NewtonID-Aware.

  172. NewtonID is now available from the Owner Info application in Extras.
  173. Tap on the routing menu on select "My NewtonID" to open NewtonID.
  174. You can also access NewtonID by tapping on its icon in Extras->Extensions.
